“fantastically conceived and directed, holding the onlooker in a sort of medieval spell.” (NYT, 05-28-29)
We are proud to present Benjamin Christensen’s magnificent, silent film Häxan (1922) with a live performance of an original score by internationally renowned silent film accompanist, Stephen Horne. Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 groundbreaking, cinematic masterpiece Häxan intertwines fact and fantasy to create a new, radical work of horror Drawing from the Malleus Maleficarum (1487) and other witch-hunting treatises, Christensen dramatizes scenes from the year 1488, creating a hallucinogenic documentary-narrative hybrid, unveiling a new mode of cinematic storytelling. Over 100 years later the re-enacted scenes haunt the viewer as forcefully as a first-hand witness account.
