SUMMARY:THE TURIN HORSE (Tarr\, 2011)
DESCRIPTION:Hypnos Theatre is extremely proud to present the films of Béla Tarr &  László Krasznahorkai – Winner of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature. \nSaturday\, December 20. 19.30\nThe Turin Horse (2011)\nRunning time: 155′ \nLanguage: Hungarian  \nSubtitles: English \nPresentation format: DCP \nDistributor: Luxbox (Paris) \nTickets: 160sek online or at the door\nIn 1889\, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche witnessed the whipping of a horse while traveling in Turin\, Italy. He tossed his arms around the horse’s neck to protect it then collapsed to the ground. In less than one month\, Nietzsche would be diagnosed with a serious mental illness that would make him bed-ridden and speechless for the next eleven years until his death. But what happened to the horse? The final film and collaboration between Béla Tarr\, Ágnes Hranitzky and László Krasznahorkai\, fills the mystery with a fictionalized story of what occurred. The man who whipped the horse is a rural farmer who makes his living taking on carting jobs into the city with his horse-drawn cart. The horse is old and in very poor health\, but does its best to obey its master’s commands. The farmer and his daughter must come to the understanding that it will be unable to go on sustaining their livelihoods. The dying of the horse is the foundation of this tragic tale. \n  \nA severe\, ascetic story that depicts the decline of the 19th-century peasantry as its own apocalypse—attains a kind of majesty on a microscopic scale. (Mubi)\n  \nOther screenings in this series \n28/11/25 Damnation (1988) \n24/01/26 Sátántangó (1994) \n28/02/26 Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) \n  \nDoors open 30 min before screen time. If you have purchased tickets using this site\, you will receive an email with a # and your name will be on the list at the door.  Feel free to write paul (at) hypnostheatre (dot) com if you have any questions.  \n
